Covering the Care Medicare Mostly Skips

Original Medicare pays for very little routine dental, vision or hearing care. Cleanings, fillings, glasses and hearing aids are mostly on you, and those costs grow with age.

Fortunately there are several ways to bring them down, and we compare them with you before you choose.

What Original Medicare Does Pay

  • Dental work tied to certain covered medical treatments, such as some care before heart surgery
  • An eye exam each year for people with diabetes, and glaucoma tests for those at higher risk
  • Eyewear following cataract removal with a lens implant, one pair
  • Hearing and balance exams ordered by a doctor for a medical reason

Routine cleanings, dentures, regular eye exams and hearing aids are not included.

Benefits Inside Part C Plans

Many Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision and hearing benefits. Coverage can be generous or very modest, so we look at the details: annual dollar limits, which services are preventive versus comprehensive, waiting periods and whether your dentist is in the network.

Stand-Alone Options

If you keep Original Medicare, a separate dental or vision policy can help. We look at the premium, the waiting period for major work and the yearly maximum to see whether the coverage is likely to pay for itself.

Over-the-counter hearing aids, available without a prescription for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, have also made hearing help more affordable for many people.

Questions to Ask Before You Pick

  • Is your dentist or eye doctor in the network?
  • What is the yearly maximum, and does unused value roll over?
  • Are dentures or implants covered, and after how long?
  • How often can you get new glasses or hearing aids?
