Getting Through Your First Sign-Up Window

A 65th birthday brings cake, family and a stack of mail from insurers who already know your date of birth. Underneath the noise sit a few real deadlines, and missing one can cost you for life.

We help you map out the months around your birthday, decide whether you need Part B now, and pick the coverage that fits once you are in.

Your Initial Enrollment Period

The window lasts seven months and centers on your birthday month, with three months on each side. Apply early in it and your benefits kick in when the birthday month begins.

People already collecting Social Security retirement checks are typically signed up for A and B without asking, and the card shows up in the mail. Otherwise, you apply through Social Security.

Penalties to Avoid

  • Part B: a 10 percent surcharge per full year you went without it while eligible, generally permanent
  • Part D: a charge for each month without creditable drug coverage after your window closes
  • Medigap: losing the guaranteed right to buy a policy once your six-month window passes

Covered through a big employer where you or your spouse still works? Delaying Part B may be allowed and enroll later in a Special Enrollment Period. We check how your employer plan works with Medicare before you decide.

Choosing Your Coverage

Once Parts A and B are in place, you choose how to fill the gaps. One path pairs a supplement with a drug plan. The other is an all-in-one Part C plan. We compare both using your medicines and doctors.

A Simple Timeline

  • Four months ahead: list your medicines, doctors and current coverage
  • Three months ahead: apply for Part B if needed
  • Two months ahead: compare plans with us
